Chapter 10

A Growing Estate

“Come on! Up and at ‘em!”

Ten blinked blearily at the figure over her bed, trying to put the pieces of the world back together. She’d slept through the rest of the day and the night after her attack, but Misdreous had let her stay in her bed for all of the next day as well. Ten knew she was losing valuable time, but she was so worn and tired that the thought of leaving her room was nearly impossible.

“You can’t stay in bed forever! Let’s go!”

Ten looked out her window to see the Lux just beginning to rise in the sky. “You’re awake?” she questioned, wondering if she was dreaming. It was nowhere near noon.

“Yup. Welcome to me giving you my best, and that involves using every bit of daylight we can. Now up! I have breakfast downstairs.”

“You cooked?” Ten exclaimed, certain that she was dreaming.

“Hah, no. I do have my limits. But I had a runner grab something from a food cart for us. We have a busy day today, so don’t dawdle.”

Misdreous yanked the covers from Ten and took them with her right out the door. Ten laid there a moment, trying to catch up. Eventually, however, she was certain she wasn’t dreaming and tried to get out of bed.

Her body felt much less sore when she set her feet on the ground, the chorus of aches that normally set in every morning holding off for a few minutes. That was certainly a welcome relief.

Dressing herself for another day of training, Ten headed downstairs, pausing to wash her face in the water basin within the chamber room. When she entered the kitchen, there was indeed food on the table. Some sweet buns, eggs, and what looked like some sort of shredded potato. It smelled great, and with steam still rising from it, it had to be freshly delivered from outside.

Luxion gave a confused sort of chirp, no doubt wondering what was going on. He was used to his morning meal coming an hour or so after Ten awoke, not right as the sun was rising.

“Don’t worry, I have something for you, little guy.” Misdreous said, reaching down to scritch behind the nubs that would one day probably be an impressive set of horns. “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, Ten, but as he gets older, he’ll go down to one meal a day or a very large meal every few days. Right now, his stomach just isn’t big enough to hold the amount of food that he needs to grow.”

Ten nodded. “I did know that they become more omnivorous and eat less often, but I didn’t know why.”

“Well, there ya go. Lesson one of this morning. With plenty to go. Now eat your food. I’m giving you a half-hour and then we have our staff to meet.”

Ten’s head shot up at that. “We’re getting staff today?”

Misdreous nodded absently as she sat down and grabbed a sweet roll. “Not all of them, but our cook and your literacy tutor said they could be here this morning.
